Value Added Investor
4C Ventures believes in taking an active role in its investments, providing support and guidance to management in areas such as strategy, recruiting, financing, operations, and perhaps most importantly, in international development.
Our partners have extensive experience in many areas relevant to the development and success of an early stage technology company, including research and development, production planning and operations, strategic planning, licensing and sourcing agreements, recruiting and human resource development, and finance. Moreover, we have developed all these skills and resources in the context of a global technology market, working with companies in the US, Europe and Asia.
Our partners have unique entrepreneurial experience as well. Two of our partners joined 4C Ventures from companies in which 4C was a seed investor:
- Steve Kahng was the CEO of Power Computing, the most successful MacIntosh
Compatible Computer Manufacturer, a company which was initiated directly by 4C.
- Andy De Mari started two successful companies, Retix and Isocor, before joining 4C's investment team.
In addition, Elserino Piol and Oliver Novick were responsible for the development and management of several new initiatives within Olivetti, including the first wireline and wireless competitors in Italy. We believe this experience is a valuable resource for start-up companies and entrepreneurs looking for guidance and support.
We feel it is important to bring more than money to a company, and we strive to do that in every case. 4C Ventures is differentiated by its commitment to early stage investing, its experience in working with and supporting emerging technology companies, and by its powerful international network which its partners can leverage on behalf of portfolio companies. We have a proven track record of doing just that for almost twenty years, and these skills and commitments are becoming increasingly important in today's global technology market.
Investment Strategy and Focus
Our investment strategy is to focus on areas in which we have particular expertise and/or can otherwise add value to a portfolio company by our involvement. We often take a lead position in an investment round and join the company's Board of Directors, although this is not a requirement in every case. We try to take an active role with the company, contributing whatever skills and resources we can, often including critical help in developing international relationships for the company.
We believe in identifying and working with excellent people and establishing lasting relationships, among entrepreneurs, management, industry partners, and co-investors. We believe one of our strongest resources is the network of relationships our partners have developed over the years among all these parties in the US and internationally.
Our primary areas of focus include:
Telecommunications
Networking and Infrastructure
Middleware
We also selectively consider investments more generally in the
New Media
Internet
e-Commerce
Innovative service companies utilizing new technologies
Computer hardware and software
Consumer access/devices
Investment Criteria
4C Ventures is an early stage technology venture investor. Most of our investments are in the US, but we have no specific geographic limitations. In fact, we emphasize international development in our work with portfolio companies, with particular emphasis in Europe.
We have no practical minimum investment size for an early stage company, although most investments will be at least $500,000. We will not usually invest more than $5 million in any one investment round. We are not limited to early stage investing (and will certainly make later stage follow-on investments in our portfolio companies), but we prefer to become involved with companies at an early stage.
We cannot consider investments in biotechnology or medical device companies, or specialty retail, distribution, or manufacturing companies without a strong technology or e-Commerce component.
